Start with the business goal, not the design

Before you choose colours, fonts or layouts, write down what your website needs to do. Are you generating enquiries, selling products, booking appointments, or simply building credibility?

A clear goal shapes every page. If you skip this step, your website can end up looking good but doing nothing for your business.

Define your audience in one sentence

Your website is not for everyone. It is for the specific people who will buy, donate, join or contact you. Try to define them in a single sentence: age, need, problem and outcome.

When you know exactly who you are talking to, your headlines, images and calls to action become much stronger.

Plan your pages around a clear journey

Most small business websites need a homepage, about page, services page, portfolio or case studies, and a contact page. That is enough to start.

Think of the journey as a funnel: visitors arrive at your homepage, understand what you do, see proof that you can help, and then take action. Every extra page should support that path.

Write your own copy first

No one knows your business like you do. Write the first draft yourself, even if it is rough. A designer can help refine it, but they cannot invent your expertise.

Keep sentences short. Use plain language. Focus on what the customer gets, not just what you do.

Choose images that build trust

Real photos of your team, products, work or premises always outperform generic stock images. If you cannot source originals, choose stock that feels authentic to your brand.

Every image should support your message, not just fill space. Compress images before uploading so your site stays fast.

Make mobile performance a priority

More than half of UK web traffic happens on mobile phones. Test your site on a real phone, not just a desktop browser. Buttons should be easy to tap, text should be readable, and forms should be short.

A slow or awkward mobile experience will push visitors away before they ever contact you.

Get the SEO basics right

Search engine optimisation does not have to be complicated. Start with a unique, descriptive title tag and meta description for every page. Use one clear H1 heading per page. Include your main keyword naturally in the first paragraph.

Add alt text to every image, keep URLs readable, and make sure your site loads quickly. That foundation is enough to give you a fighting chance on Google.

Set up the essentials before launch

Before you go live, connect your domain, set up an SSL certificate, create a simple contact form, and add your business email. Test everything on desktop and mobile.

Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap. This tells Google your site exists and helps you track how it appears in search results.

Have a plan for updates after launch

A website is not a one-off project. It works best when you keep it updated with fresh content, testimonials, case studies and blog posts. Even small updates show visitors (and Google) that your business is active.
